Fees (privately paying clients) 

1. Travers Law offers competitive pricing for legal services and provides transparent billing to clients. Fees and payment arrangements are discussed and agreed upon before any work is done.

2. We provide you with an estimate of our likely fees and disbursements and the scope of work covered based upon your instructions and our understanding of the work involved. This is done at the onset of the Advocate/client relationship. Billing is conducted by way of 6-minute units (as a minimum), where an hourly rate is agreed. 

3. Please note, we shall issue invoices monthly and we expect all invoices to be settled within 14 days of issue. We reserve the right to charge interest at a daily rate on any unpaid invoice, from the end of our credit period, at the rate for the time being payable in accordance with the Advocates Fees (Prescribed Rate of Interest) Regulations 2000.

4. Our estimate does not provide for:

(i) Any advice or work not referenced within our terms of engagement, or for which an estimate has not been given.

(ii) Any advice or work arising from changed circumstances or legislation.

(iii) Our advice or work arising from your changing your instructions or acting differently from the original basis of instruction.

5. Where work is required outside our scope of work where the nature and extent of the further work, in our reasonable opinion, can be judged with accuracy, we will give you a further estimate for such further work. Where such further work cannot be reasonably estimated and you instruct us nevertheless to carry out further work to meet your requirements, then our current hourly fee rates will apply. In such an ongoing case, please consider the estimate for any future month to be the same as the amount invoiced in the previous month. Should you require a more particularised estimate, at any point during your instruction of us, please do not hesitate to request the same from us. 

6. We may agree fixed fee payments, to be paid in advance. Such a fee arrangement may cover the entirety of your matter or a phase within the overall proceedings. 

7. Travers Law conducts some work under legal aid certificate. Where appropriate, this will be discussed at the outset of the client/Advocate relationship. 

My complaints policy

If you have a complaint, please contact me with the details. I would prefer that you put your complaint in writing (either by post or in electronic format and provide copies of any supporting documents). 

Next Steps 

1. Your complaint will be acknowledged by letter or e-mail within three days of receiving it, enclosing a copy of our complaint’s procedure
2. Your complaint will then be investigated. If your complaint is about a member of staff, it will be investigated by me. If the complaint is about me, I will review it initially to try and resolve it with you. 
3. I will then write to you within 7 days setting out my initial views and any proposals to resolve your complaint. 
4. If my views and proposals are not acceptable to you, you will have 14 days to request a meeting
5. If you request a meeting, I will then invite you to meet with me, to discuss, and, hopefully, resolve, your complaint. I will send you the invitation within 5 days of you requesting the meeting and the meeting will take place within 10 days of my sending the invite.
6. Within 3 days of the meeting, I will write to you to confirm what took place and what, if any, solutions I agreed with you.
7. If you do not want a meeting, or it is not possible, you may instead request in writing that I reconsider my original view, set out any additional grounds and your reasons for not accepting my views and proposals, and I  will reconsider and will send you a detailed written reply to your complaint, including my further views and proposals or suggestions for resolving the matter, within 14 days of you sending to me the written request for reconsideration.
8. At this stage, if you are still not satisfied, I will arrange within 7 days for another Advocate, to be agreed upon, to be sent all of the papers and correspondence and to review them and to report to back to me within 14 days and to copy their report to you. I will let you know if I agree their findings and proposals within 7 days.  
9. If I do not agree with their findings and proposals, I will write to you within 14 days of receiving them from them, confirming my final position on your complaint and explaining my reasons.
10. If you are still not satisfied, you can then contact the Isle of Man Law Society or the Clerk to the Advocates Disciplinary Tribunal.
